Speed Up Video vs Slow Down Video: Which Do You Need?

Changing video speed covers two opposite jobs, and each one solves a different problem. Deciding which direction you need usually comes down to whether you have too much footage or not enough detail.

When to Speed Up a Video

Set any speed above 1x to speed up a video, and use it whenever a clip is longer than the story it tells. A few common cases:

  • Timelapses. Turn an hour of static camera footage - a sunset, a build, a plant growing - into a clip that plays in seconds. Speeds of 8x to 16x are typical; trim the source clip first so you are only speeding up the part you want.
